Main Features and Advantages
10.4″ TFT with 8 F-keys and gloved-operation touch
The Siemens 6AV6647-0AE11-3AX0 splits its operator surface between a 10.4″ 640 × 480 TFT and 8 mechanical function keys below the screen, with an on-screen numeric and alphanumeric keyboard invoked by the keys or touch. For packaging aux-stations, conveyor junction boxes, and skid-local panels where operators wear gloves or need tactile “home/jog/reset” without hunting a soft-button on a dimmed screen, the 8 F-keys on the 6AV6647-0AE11-3AX0 are the differentiator over a pure touch Basic (KTP600/TP1500). The keys themselves carry no LEDs (unlike Comfort KP models), but the on-screen button states + F-key legend text in WinCC Flex compensate — acceptable for non-safety stations.
MPI + PROFIBUS DP in one port — the S7-200 / S7-300 bridge
A key reason plants hoard the 6AV6647-0AE11-3AX0 is the dual personality of its 9-pin sub-D: it autonegotiates as MPI (to talk S7-200, S7-300, LOGO!, old SINUMERIK) or as PROFIBUS DP-V1 master (to S7-1200/1500 + ET 200 remote I/O + drives). This makes the 6AV6647-0AE11-3AX0 the cheapest Siemens HMI that can sit on an S7-200 MPI bus (up to 187.5 kbps) and also serve as a DP panel on a newer S7-1500 DP-Master skid — no PN infrastructure needed. RS422 on a second sub-D adds MODBUS RTU or DF1 (Allen-Bradley) for third-party skid components. For plants that never adopted PROFINET on the low-end (still common on S7-300 retrofits and S7-200 legacy lines), the 6AV6647-0AE11-3AX0 is the native fit.
WinCC Flexible 2008 + TIA V11 dual-path (last of its kind)
The Siemens 6AV6647-0AE11-3AX0 is among the last Siemens HMI models configurable in WinCC Flexible 2008 SP2 Compact — Siemens’ pre-TIA Windows-toolchain that many 2008–2012 vintage lines never migrated off because re-validation (pharma/food) or re-commissioning cost exceeded the benefit. At the same time, the 6AV6647-0AE11-3AX0 also opens in WinCC Basic V11/V12 inside TIA Portal, so a plant that upgrades its S7-1200/1500 project to TIA can still drop this panel in without a full HMI re-write. 2 MB / 500 tags / 200 alarms / 50 screens is tight by modern standards but ample for a single skid or zone panel — the 6AV6647-0AE11-3AX0 was never meant to be a plant-wide SCADA face.
Constraints worth knowing before specifying
The Siemens 6AV6647-0AE11-3AX0 has no USB, no SD, no Ethernet — project download MUST go over MPI/DP via a PC Adapter USB or a CP card on the engineering PC. There is no offline clone path (no SD to carry the compiled project), so spares strategy requires either keeping a bench-preloaded spare or archiving the .pd/.ap13 project file + re-downloading on swap — which takes 5–10 minutes over 1.5 Mbps MPI, longer over 187.5 kbps. There is no hardware RTC; the 6AV6647-0AE11-3AX0 runs a software clock synced from the PLC’s system clock at runtime — if the PLC drops off, alarm timestamps drift until re-sync. Backlight is not dimmable (PROFIenergy not present on Basic gen1), so 50,000 h is a hard countdown — at 24/7 that’s ~5.7 years before visible dim, plan spare accordingly. Plastic front (not cast aluminum like Comfort) means IP65 is fine for light washdown but not chemical-rated hose-down that Comfort handles.
