DPU-MR

Honeywell DPU-MR Distributed Processing Unit Module (Experion PKS DCS Redundant Controller)
Product Description
DPU-MR
The DPU-MR is a redundant distributed processing unit module developed by Honeywell for the Experion Process Knowledge System (PKS) distributed control system (DCS). It is engineered to provide high-availability control in critical industrial processes, functioning as a core component in redundant controller architectures. Its main roles include executing control strategies, processing real-time data from field devices, and coordinating with other system elements like I/O modules and HMIs to sustain stable operation, even when hardware failures occur. This module is extensively utilized in mission-critical settings such as oil refineries, chemical plants, and power generation facilities, where unplanned downtime can lead to losses surpassing $1 million per hour.
Operating in a 1:1 redundant setup, the module consists of two identical DPU-MR units, namely the primary and backup, running in parallel. The primary unit actively carries out control loops, while the backup stays in synchronization (updating every 1ms) and automatically takes over within 50ms if the primary unit fails, such as due to a processor error or power loss. This “hot standby” feature guarantees zero process interruption. For example, in a natural gas processing plant, the redundancy of the DPU-MR prevents a controller failure from disrupting the separation process, which could otherwise cause unsafe pressure accumulation.
Equipped with a 32-bit dual-core processor (1.2GHz) and 2GB DDR3 memory, the DPU-MR can support up to 5,000 I/O points (both analog and digital) and 1,000 control loops (including PID, ratio, and cascade), with a control execution cycle as short as 10ms. It operates on Honeywell’s Control Execution Environment (CEE) software, enabling the implementation of complex control strategies like model predictive control (MPC) and fuzzy logic. These are crucial for optimizing processes such as enhancing the efficiency of distillation columns, which can improve product yield by up to 2%.
