Allen-Bradley 1746-OB16 SLC 500 16-Point DC Sourcing Output Module

Allen-Bradley 1746-OB16 SLC 500 16-Point DC Sourcing Output Module

The Allen-Bradley 1746-OB16 is a 16-point discrete DC output module manufactured by Allen-Bradley, a brand of Rockwell Automation, for the SLC 500 family of programmable logic controllers. It is a current-sourcing (PNP) output module that switches the positive side of a 24 V DC field supply to connected loads, translating the processor’s output image table into real electrical action.

Designed to occupy a single slot in any 1746 series modular I/O chassis, the Allen-Bradley 1746-OB16 drives solenoids, relay coils, motor starter coils, indicator lamps, and other 24 V DC discrete loads. Each of the 16 channels is individually indicated by its own LED, and the module includes electronic thermal current limiting that protects an overloaded channel while leaving the remaining fifteen points operational.

Application Scenarios

Consider a bottling line where a single SLC 500 rack controls the entire filling and capping sequence: solenoid valves for product and rinse media, pneumatic actuators for capping heads, contactors for the conveyor drives, and a bank of status lamps on the operator panel. All of these loads are 24 V DC, all of them need to switch quickly and predictably, and all of them need to be visible to the maintenance staff when something does not fire.

This is the job the Allen-Bradley 1746-OB16 was built for. One module handles sixteen loads, the 0.1 ms turn-on delay keeps the sequence timing tight, and the per-point LEDs mean a technician can tell at a glance which output the processor is calling for versus which one the field device is actually seeing. When a solenoid coil eventually shorts, the module’s thermal limiting isolates that single channel instead of dragging down the whole rack—the line loses one actuator instead of the entire capping sequence. In a plant where the control platform is decades old but still perfectly suited to the machine, that kind of graceful degradation is worth more than any specification on a datasheet.
