Application Scenarios
At a beverage packaging line, an ageing PLC-5 system was being migrated to a CompactLogix platform, but the existing DeviceNet network and dozens of pushbuttons, selector switches and safety gate contacts could not all be changed in one outage. The integrator needed an input module that would accept the existing 24V DC field wiring and sit on the same DeviceNet trunk without re-engineering the entire I/O layer.
The team installed 1715-IB16D modules in compact, IP20 enclosures close to each machine section. Because the module accepts 10–28.8 V DC and supports both sinking and sourcing inputs, the existing NPN and PNP proximity sensors and switch wiring were reused without modification. The DeviceNet trunk wiring was extended using standard thick or thin trunk cable, and each module was assigned a unique MAC ID using its rotary switches. After a single shift of commissioning, the line returned to production with the original pushbutton and limit-switch behaviour preserved, and the maintenance team gained per-module DeviceNet diagnostics they had never had on the old system.
