Product Overview
The 1407-CGCM is a Combination Generator Control Module (CGCM) manufactured by Allen-Bradley, a brand of Rockwell Automation. It is a microprocessor-based control and protection device designed to integrate excitation control, generator protection, synchronization, and full-featured metering into a single rugged, panel-mounted unit. The 1407-CGCM is engineered for direct integration with Rockwell’s Logix family of programmable controllers, particularly ControlLogix, where it appears on the network as a smart I/O module rather than a standalone relay.
The core value of the 1407-CGCM is consolidation. Traditionally, generator paralleling and protection required a separate automatic voltage regulator (AVR), a synchronizer, a protective relay, and a load-sharing controller, interconnected with extensive panel wiring. The 1407-CGCM replaces this collection with one module that performs high-speed voltage and frequency regulation locally while publishing all metering and diagnostic data to the Logix controller as native tags. This eliminates inter-panel wiring, removes latency from the control loop, and makes generator parameters available for data logging, remote monitoring, and complex load-sharing logic without gateways or custom drivers.
The module is intended for overvoltage Category II applications in industrial environments of pollution degree 2, per IEC 60664-1. It must be mounted vertically because of its internal heatsink; any other orientation reduces heat dissipation and risks premature failure. Designed and manufactured in the USA, the 1407-CGCM was officially discontinued on 31 December 2023, but Rockwell continues to classify it as repairable and replaceable — making tested surplus and refurbished units the practical supply channel for existing installations.
