ABB 200-CICN ControlNet Interface Module for Series 200 Remote I/O

ABB 200-CICN ControlNet Interface Module for Series 200 Remote I/O

Product Overview

The ABB 200-CICN and ABB 200-CIE are plug-in communication interface units built for the ABB Series 200 central unit platform — the same hardware family that underpins SattCon 200, SattLine and the Advant Controller 250 / Advant OCS open control system. They are the two network doors of a Series 200 rack, and they exist so a mature controller can be extended without a single change to the control logic. ABB 200-CICN is the ControlNet side: a single-channel, 5 Mbit/s interface that turns the controller into a deterministic remote I/O scanner, exchanging data over coaxial cable with up to 31 200-ACN remote adapters on one segment. Access is CTDMA rather than contention-based, so scan timing stays predictable as the segment fills — which is exactly what a temperature-controlled exothermic loop needs.

ABB 200-CIE is the Ethernet counterpart. It carries one IEEE 802.3 channel, presents a 15-pin D-type AUI port to an external transceiver, and handles the TCP/IP stack with a Modbus TCP server and FTP, which means programming download, online monitoring and SCADA or historian polling can all share one drop. Both units draw power from the central system supply on the 200-BPN backplane instead of a separate field feed, and both are mechanically key-coded so a replacement cannot be forced into the wrong slot. For plants running legacy ABB racks, the ABB 200-CIE and ABB 200-CICN pair represents the lowest-risk way to add remote I/O reach and plant-network visibility at the same time — no migration, no re-commissioning, no rewrite.

Main Features and Advantages

Deterministic I/O scanning: The 200-CICN does not wait for a free slot on the wire. ControlNet uses CTDMA, where every node gets a scheduled time slice, so the scan cycle stays flat whether the segment carries three adapters or thirty. That predictability is the reason this module is still specified for remote drops on exothermic batch reactors, where jitter in the temperature loop is not an annoyance but a process risk. Five megabits per second sounds modest next to modern Ethernet, yet on a dedicated I/O segment it is more than enough, and it never degrades under load the way a shared CSMA/CD link can.

Rack-level serviceability: Both the 200-CICN and the 200-CIE mount as standard plug-in units on the 200-BPN backplane and take their power from the central supply, so there is no extra field wiring, no separate 24 V feed and no fuse coordination to argue about during a shutdown window. Mechanical key coding means a module physically refuses the wrong slot — a small detail that has saved more than one maintenance crew from a smoked board during a 2 a.m. callout. Node addressing on the 200-CICN is set with two rotary switches on the front panel, so a replacement can be configured without a laptop, a licence dongle or a service engineer on site.

Two networks, one controller: Installing the 200-CIE beside the 200-CICN in the same rack lets a legacy controller speak hard real-time I/O on one side and open TCP/IP on the other. The Ethernet side carries a Modbus TCP server and FTP, which is usually all a plant historian or a third-party SCADA needs, and the AUI port means you choose the medium — thick coax, twisted pair or fibre — by choosing the external transceiver rather than by replacing the module. Practically, that turns a connectivity upgrade into a cabling decision instead of a controller migration, and it keeps the capital cost inside a maintenance budget.

Diagnostics you can read from the aisle: One green LED for internal power plus three bicolour LEDs for unit status and channel A/B condition give enough front-panel information to separate a network fault from a module fault before anyone opens a cabinet. Combined with battery-backed buffering and a buffered Ethernet stack on the 200-CIE, routine troubleshooting rarely escalates beyond the panel door.
