The 100-D420EA00​ is a high-current IEC power contactor from the Allen-Bradley Bulletin 100-D series, manufactured by Rockwell Automation and engineered for the most demanding motor-control and power-switching duties in industrial automation. Rated at 420 A under AC-3 utilization category, the 100-D420EA00​ stands at the top of the MCS D frame size, capable of controlling three-phase induction motors up to 425 kW at 690 V AC. As a core switching element in PLC-driven control panels, the 100-D420EA00​ serves as the final power-stage interface between the automation controller and the motor or load, executing start/stop commands with electromechanical reliability that solid-state devices cannot match in high-horsepower applications.

The defining characteristic of the 100-D420EA00​ is its electronic coil (EA designation) with integrated electronic interface. Unlike conventional AC electromagnetic coils that draw high inrush current and continuous holding power, the electronic coil of the 100-D420EA00​ operates across a wide control-voltage range—208-277 V AC at 50/60 Hz or 200-255 V DC—while consuming a mere 7 W in DC holding mode versus 490 VA at pick-up. This low-power, wide-tolerance design allows the 100-D420EA00​ to be driven directly from PLC digital output modules or solid-state relays without intermediate power amplifiers, simplifying panel design and reducing control-circuit energy consumption.

The ​ features three main power poles with a 0 N.O. / 0 N.C. auxiliary contact configuration, providing a clean, modular foundation for engineers who can add side-mounted auxiliary contact blocks as needed. With a short-time withstand current of 4700 A for 10 seconds at 60 °C and Type 2 coordination per IEC 60947-4-1, the ​ delivers the breaking capacity essential for protecting downstream circuits against fault conditions. Although Rockwell Automation formally discontinued the ​ effective March 31, 2019, it remains a mission-critical spare for the extensive installed base of Bulletin 100-D systems worldwide, with the 100-E400ED11​ designated as the engineering replacement for new designs.
