The 1756-L73S is an Allen-Bradley (Rockwell Automation) GuardLogix 5570 safety processor — the 8 MB standard / 4 MB safety-memory member of the 1756-L7xS line. It is a single-slot primary controller that runs ordinary Logix logic and a separately signed safety task in the same chassis, and it is useless without its partner: safety certification is delivered by the pair, not by the silicon alone.

What separates the 1756-L73S from a standard 1756-L73 is not the instruction set or the backplane. It is the partitioned memory, the safety signature, and the second brain in the next slot. That architecture is why a plant can prove to an auditor that the e-stop path and the recipe logic live in different trust domains — and why a single failed module does not silently take both with it.

Application Scenarios

Picture a robotic weld cell with a light curtain, two safety mats, a three-position enabling device, and a servo press that must observe Safe Limited Speed during teach mode. The standard logic is unremarkable — conveyor interlocks, weld schedules, HMI pop-ups. The safety logic is not: it has to cross-validate the curtain inputs, kill STO to the drives inside the certified timing window, and leave an auditable signature that nobody changed the trip setpoint last Tuesday.

That cell was originally commissioned on a 1756-L63S. It ran for years, but the program grew: more analog blocks for the weld schedule, more AOIs for the newer servos, and the safety task was bumping the 3.75 MB partition. Dropping in a 1756-L73S doubled the safety memory and doubled the standard partition again, with no new chassis, no new network, and no re-certification of the safety function itself — only the required safety validation and re-sign. The e-stop still lands on the same two terminals, the drives still see the same CIP Safety telegrams, and the audit trail is cleaner than it was on the original hardware.
