Main Features and Advantages
PROFIBUS DP native — no gateway into S7-300/400 legacy cells:
The “PB” suffix is the whole value prop of the Kollmorgen 04S-M60/8-PB — this drive speaks DP-V1 slave out of the box, GSD file from Kollmorgen’s site drops into STEP 7 / PCS 7 / TIA (with GSD import), and the S7-400 OB1/OB35 cyclically writes PPO telegrams (setpoint, control word) and reads back actual / status word. For plants that never migrated off PROFIBUS (printing presses, converting lines, packaging OEMs, legacy CNC retrofits), the Kollmorgen 04S-M60/8-PB is the right spare — an AKD-P (Profinet or EtherCAT) would need a DP gateway or a PLC migration. The 12 Mbps top rate is plenty for a 6–12 axis S700 rack on a single DP segment.
8-feedback universal port — one SKU for every AKM variant:
The “/8” in Kollmorgen 04S-M60/8-PB means the feedback connector is wired to a mux that supports eight feedback families: EnDat 2.2 (absolute multi-turn), BiSS-C, Hiperface DSL (digital over 2-wire), SinCos 1Vpp (incremental high-res), Resolver (rugged, high-temp), SFD (Kollmorgen’s Smart Feedback Device), and a couple of OEM-specific. This collapses spare planning: if the line has AKM41G (EnDat), AKM52G (Hiperface DSL), AKM71Q (Resolver) on different axes, one Kollmorgen 04S-M60/8-PB SKU covers all three — no “EnDat only” vs “Hiperface only” sub-SKU confusion like on older Servostar S4.
60 A peak / 30 A cont in a narrow 70 mm slice:
The Kollmorgen 04S-M60/8-PB pushes 60 A peak (≤3 s) and ~30 A cont @ 40 °C in a 70 mm wide DIN slice — that’s AKM 4–7 frame territory (roughly 3–11 kW continuous depending on winding voltage). For a 6-axis printing-press deck (3× AKD? no — S700 PB), this means 6× 70 mm = 420 mm of DIN rail, well within a 600 mm cabinet width alongside the 24 V aux, PROFIBUS coupler, and I/O. The narrow footprint is why survived so long in European OEM cabinets that were specced when 100 mm was the “wide” drive standard.
WorkBench + auto-tuning:
Commissioning the Kollmorgen 04S-M60/8-PB goes through Kollmorgen WorkBench on the RJ45 service port (or USB front for quick laptop). Auto motor-ID reads the AKM winding R/L/Ke, auto inertia estimates the load (useful on printing nip rollers where inertia ratio is 5–10×), and the anti-resonance filter wizard knocks down the first mechanical resonance (common on long belt-driven axes, cantilever rollers). Real-time oscilloscope in WorkBench captures current/torque/speed/position on the fly — essential when a 12-color press axis shows 0.5% velocity ripple at 3000 iph and the root cause is a slipping nip-spring, not the drive.
STO SIL3 without safety-bus:
The Kollmorgen 04S-M60/8-PB has hardware STO (Safe Torque Off) certified SIL3 / PL e per IEC 61800-5-2, routed through the 24 V ctrl DI pins. This means the S7-400 F-CPU (or a hardwired safety relay) can drop STO on the 04S-M60/8-PB without a Profisafe telegram — the drive drops IGBT gate pulses, the motor coasts/brakes, and the PROFIBUS slave stays alive (diagnostic telegram still goes) because the 24 V ctrl stays up. For retrofit machines adding a safety relay to an old S7-300, this is cleaner than a full Profisafe stack.
The Kollmorgen 04S-M60/8-PB is in Kollmorgen’s “mature” band — new designs spec AKD (AKD-P00606 = 6/18 A, AKD-P01206 = 12/30 A for 480 V, or AKD-P02406 = 24/48 A if the 60 A pk maps higher). AKD loses PROFIBUS (AKD does EtherCAT / EtherNet/IP / Profinet RT / CANopen / Modbus TCP), so migrating a 04S-M60/8-PB cell to AKD means also migrating the S7-400 DP master to a Profinet controller or adding an EtherCAT coupler. For plants not ready for that, the Kollmorgen 04S-M60/8-PB NOS supply is the pragmatic path — just last-time-buy before goes NOS-only.
