Description
The 802T-HPE-J/A is a metal plug-in oiltight limit switch from Allen-Bradley, part of Rockwell Automation’s Bulletin 802T family of NEMA-style position-sensing switches. In the two-part plug-in architecture, this is the switch module itself: the head-and-body cartridge that mates with a permanently wired base.
Built around a die-cast metal body sealed to NEMA Type 4 and 13, the 802T-HPE-J/A carries a spring-return rotary lever with high operating torque, two snap-acting circuits (1 NO + 1 NC), and clockwise plus counterclockwise operation. It is specified where oil, coolant, chips, washdown or low ambient temperature would destroy an ordinary micro switch or blind a proximity sensor.
Application Scenarios
A machine-tool builder produces automatic turret lathes that run three shifts under flood cooling with straight cutting oil. Every axis needs a hard end-of-travel limit and a repeatable home reference. For years the builder used a general-purpose micro switch inside a sheet-metal guard, and the failure never varied: oil wicked past the seal, chips packed around the actuator, and the switch either stuck closed — genuinely dangerous on a limit function — or failed open and stopped the machine.
Each failure sent a technician to unlock the enclosure, break the conduit, pull the wires and terminate a new switch. That was around forty minutes of downtime on a machine billed by the hour, plus the standing risk of a wiring mistake made under time pressure.
Replacing those switches with the 802T-HPE-J/A changes three things at once. The NEMA 4/13 oiltight, IP67-sealed die-cast body resists the coolant and chip ingress that killed the previous device. The plug-in construction changes the repair entirely: the base stays bolted to the machine with its conduit and wiring untouched, and the technician unplugs the cartridge and plugs in a replacement. Forty minutes of re-termination becomes a couple of minutes, with no conductor ever disturbed. And the high operating torque with a snap-acting contact block gives a decisive, repeatable trip at 9° of lever travel, so the home-position reference does not drift as the mechanism wears — the difference between a machine that holds tolerance and one that slowly loses it.
Parameter
| Main Parameters | Value / Description |
|---|---|
| Product Model | 802T-HPE-J/A (Bulletin 802T family; Rockwell’s base catalogue number is 802T-HPE, the J/A suffix identifies the connection-option and Series A hardware variant — confirm against the nameplate before ordering) |
| Manufacturer | Allen-Bradley (Rockwell Automation) |
| Product Category | Metal plug-in oiltight limit switch — 2-circuit electromechanical position switch module (head-and-body cartridge) |
| Switch Construction | Plug-in style: permanently wired base plus a plug-in switch cartridge, so the switch is replaced without touching field wiring |
| Actuator | Rotary lever arm, spring return, high operating torque; operates clockwise and counterclockwise; operating lever ordered separately |
| Contact Configuration | 2-circuit snap-acting block with standard contacts — 1 normally open + 1 normally closed (SPDT) |
| Contact Rating | NEMA A600 / P600, 10 A thermal continuous, up to 600 V AC / 600 V DC — heavy enough for direct motor and contactor coil duty |
| Travel & Torque | 9° nominal travel to operate contacts, 3.5° max travel to reset, 90° maximum travel, 0.56 N·m (5 lb-in) max torque to operate — high torque resists vibration-induced false tripping |
| Operating Temperature | Extended low-temperature version: −40 °C to +110 °C — seals and lubricants stay functional in cold storage and unheated outdoor plant |
| Enclosure Rating | Die-cast metal body with oiltight gasket; NEMA Type 4 and 13 as standard, NEMA 6P and IP65/IP67 sealing on the gasketed configuration |
| Wiring Entry | 1/2″ NPT threaded conduit hub in the base as standard; the J connection option on this variant provides a 5-pin mini-type quick-disconnect receptacle instead of a conduit gland |
| Mechanical Life | Multi-million-cycle mechanical endurance; 2 million operations is the typical figure quoted for the standard-energy plug-in 802T series |
| Mounting & Dimensions | NEMA standard mounting with two equal-length #10 fasteners; approx. 124 × 85 × 46 mm, 0.54 kg |
| Certifications | UL Listed, CSA Certified, CE marked for all applicable directives, CCC; country of origin Dominican Republic |
