1747-SDN A DeviceNet Scanner Module for Allen-Bradley SLC 500

1747-SDN A DeviceNet Scanner Module for Allen-Bradley SLC 500

The 1747-SDN A is a DeviceNet scanner (master) module for the Rockwell Automation / Allen-Bradley SLC 500 platform, occupying a single slot in a 1746 chassis. It gives the SLC processor a DeviceNet network port and moves I/O data between the 125/250/500 kbit/s bus and the controller’s M0/M1 files through block-transfer instructions, so the ladder program deals with ordinary integer and bit data instead of a network protocol.

In short, the 1747-SDN A is the component that lets an SLC 500 talk to a DeviceNet network without an external gateway. The scanner handles the bus timing, the node polling and the error recovery; the processor only has to move the resulting data in and out of the M0/M1 files.

Application Scenarios

A bottling line built in the late 1990s ran a SLC 5/04 with a mix of 1746 I/O and a growing collection of DeviceNet devices: a PowerFlex drive on the infeed, a valve manifold on the filler, and a remote I/O block on the capper. Each device had been added with its own interface, and the panel had three different wiring standards and two different termination styles. When a node dropped off the network, the maintenance team spent the first hour deciding which interface was responsible.

Fitting the 1747-SDN A put all three devices on one DeviceNet trunk. The scanner polls the nodes on a fixed schedule, so the SLC program receives the drive status, the valve positions and the remote I/O in the same block-transfer read; when a node faults, the module’s status information identifies which node it is. The line now has one trunk, one terminator at each end, one set of wiring rules and one spare module on the shelf. The electrician still checks the same four things — power, termination, address, cable — but he checks them on one network instead of three.
