Allen-Bradley 1203-CN1 ControlNet Module – Connect Legacy Drives to ControlLogix, 0–99 Node Address

The 1203-CN1 is an Allen-Bradley (Rockwell Automation) ControlNet communications module in the 1203 series of SCANport communication adapters. Its function is narrowly and precisely defined: it is a one-to-one protocol bridge between a ControlNet network running at 5 Mbps and a single SCANport-equipped device—most commonly a 1336-series AC drive, a 1394 multi-axis motion system, or an SMC Dialog Plus controller. Where the drive speaks SCANport and the plant network speaks ControlNet, the 1203-CN1 is the interface that makes the two intelligible to each other.

Inside the automation architecture, the 1203-CN1 translates ControlNet scheduled I/O messages into SCANport signals and vice versa. Scheduled traffic carries the time-critical data—16-bit logic command and status words, 16-bit speed reference and feedback, and datalink-mapped I/O—while unscheduled messages handle parameter reads and writes, fault queries, and configuration. This dual-mode operation means the same module can deliver deterministic, repeatable drive control and still provide full parameter-level access from a ControlLogix or PLC-5 processor without disrupting the control schedule. The 1203-CN1 is not a multi-drop gateway: each unit serves one SCANport device, giving that device its own dedicated ControlNet node address, which is part of why the module remains straightforward to commission and troubleshoot.

Physically, the 1203-CN1 is a compact, DIN-rail-mountable module with a 24 VDC supply (maximum 250 mA), dual BNC coaxial ports for ControlNet Channel A and Channel B, an 8-pin circular mini-DIN SCANport connector, an RS-232 serial port for local configuration, and four bi-color LEDs for module, network, and SCANport status. Node addressing is set on-module via push-button switches, with addresses 0–99. Rockwell Automation discontinued the 1203-CN1 in 2015; current supply is new-surplus and refurbished stock, which has made it a strategically stocked spare part in plants that still depend on SCANport drive technology.

Main Features and Advantages

Deterministic ControlNet communication with a dual messaging model

The 1203-CN1 exploits ControlNet’s time-division-multiplexed architecture to carry scheduled I/O traffic and unscheduled explicit messages simultaneously. Scheduled data—logic commands, speed or torque references, status and feedback—is delivered within the configured Network Update Time, which is what makes the module suitable for coordinated, time-critical drive control. Unscheduled messaging runs in the same network without disturbing that schedule, carrying parameter reads and writes, fault queries, and configuration traffic. The result is that a ControlLogix processor can both regulate a drive in real time and interrogate its parameters remotely, using the same network connection.

One device, one node, no shared-link ambiguity

Unlike multi-drop gateway modules that serve several devices through one network connection, the 1203-CN1 connects to exactly one SCANport product. That product receives its own ControlNet node address, its own scheduled connection, and its own unscheduled bandwidth. This simplicity has real maintenance value: when a drive stops communicating, the fault is isolated to one module and one device, and the diagnostic LEDs on that module identify immediately whether the problem lies with the module, the network, or the SCANport connection.

Redundant media support through dual coaxial ports

The 1203-CN1 carries separate Channel A and Channel B BNC ports, allowing it to participate in redundant ControlNet media configurations. Where network availability matters—continuous process lines, material handling systems with coordinated drives, and remote pump stations—the second channel provides a failover path if the primary coaxial trunk is damaged. Combined with ControlNet’s tap topology, this allows a single cable break to be tolerated without bringing down the connected device.
